3 Generations of Quality and Service.
With a rich history and roots firmly planted in the Tallmadge community, we're proud to continue a tradition of quality and service.
Henry Bierce began his feed and coal supply back in 1910 just off the Tallmadge Circle. Earlier, Stahl Fenton & Sons had manufactured crockery ware and clay smoke pipes at the same location. You can read more about Henry Bierce's heritage by clicking here.
The original building was an old barn (circa 1840s) that Henry had purchased in 1908 or 1909 and relocated to its present site just off Tallmadge Circle. This original barn is still an integral part of The Henry Bierce Company facility, hidden behind the familiar sign you see facing Southeast Avenue.
The barn portion currently houses offices, the brick showroom and building materials sales counter. The restoration was lovingly completed by Don Reisig of Reisig Restorations of Tallmadge in 1996. At completion of the restoration, the rough-hewn beams, barn siding and pine flooring were exposed to capture the barn-like original setting.
At the same time, a 2,200 square foot addition was added to the hardware store that allowed for a greatly expanded paint department and service area.
One of the biggest undertakings involved tearing down three rental homes to make room for an expanded parking lot (increasing the spaces from 32 to 50).
All of this construction activity came nearly 20 years after the hardware store was last remodeled and expanded in 1978. A big grand re-opening celebration took place in August of 1999 to mark the opening of the new entrance with an all new brick facade, wheel chair ramps, automatic doors, a large window display and unique brick sculpture.
Through the years, The Henry Bierce Company has grown to meet the ever increasing demands of today's customers. Henry started out supplying feed and coal to mostly rural Tallmadge neighbors. Following World war II, building materials were added to meet the new housing demand. Our hardware store was established in the early 1950's. The business grew under the direction of Henry's sons Lu and David.
In April of 1998 the Henry Bierce Tool Rental was established. Since its opening the tool rental has been very successful causing two expansions in order to accommodate growth.
Because of its growth, The Henry Bierce Company can provide residential and commercial customers with a full range of services and materials -- all under one roof. That's underscored daily with a new theme: "Friendly service, expert advice, and all of the materials you need."
